Spawner surveys are wrapping up! As numbers of bot Spawner surveys are wrapping up! As numbers of both live fish and carcasses dwindle, many of our volunteers are now looking back on the 2024 season. Emily Carter, one of our volunteers that surveyed Starbird Creek, said this about her time volunteering:

"For the past three months I had the opportunity to be a spawner survey volunteer along Starbird Creek, a charming tributary I’ve come to adore. Folks who’ve lived along the creek for a long time tell stories about the days when you could see dozens of salmon on any given day in the fall. This has not been the case recently, with zero sightings in the 2023 survey season. With two culvert removal projects in the last few years, we are hopeful to see fish numbers start to increase! I recall the magical moment in early November when we heard a suspicious splash upstream from us. We scurried over to catch a glimpse of the culprit, just in time to see a coho fly out of the water! This was the earliest in the season a salmon was recorded being seen in Starbird Creek history. Following that, were a few strong weeks with 1-3 sightings each time until it seemed they were done for the season. Each sighting felt like a miracle. Though this creek isn’t full of salmon, the surveys were still fun and exciting, especially knowing the data we collected was going to be used to make predictions about returns in the future. Even when there were no salmon sightings there were plenty of other things to enjoy like fascinating fungi, cool trees, mini waterfalls, and fun fall trekking with new friends. I’m really pleased with my time as a spawner survey volunteer and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fulfilling excuse to get outside in the cooler months!"

Attached are some photos from Emily's surveys. 🐟 Thanks to all our volunteers who have been diligently romping around in local creeks for us this year, you're rockstars!
