Much of Edgewater Park is a riparian zone. Riparian describes land which borders a river.
Native vegetation adjacent to the water is crucial to river health. Native plants form an integral part of the food chain and provide important habitat for wildlife including frogs, salmanders, and herons.
Not all plants are created equal: invasive plants such as Japanese Knotweed, Himalayan Blackberry, and English Ivy can outcompete native plants, and are not favored by native wildlife or beneficial insects.
