Seasonal Internships
Environmental Education Internship: The Environmental Education Intern will assist with classroom and field instruction for K-12 programs throughout Skagit County. Content will focus on salmon ecology and freshwater habitat restoration. The intern will work with our AmeriCorps Washington Service Corps Education Associate to visit classrooms for in-person lessons, help conduct field trips around the Skagit, and assist with other outreach events as needed/desired.
Spawner Survey Internship: The Spawner Survey intern assists SFEG staff in implementing the spawner survey program for selected restoration sites. The intern will participate in the SFEG spawner survey workshop, receive training in how to identify adult salmon species and redds, conduct weekly surveys on one or more streams, and assist with data entry, analysis, and reporting. This program documents salmon spawning in proposed and completed restoration sites. This information is useful in understanding the effectiveness of restoration efforts and is used by WDFW for escapement forecasting. The intern works with SFEG field staff and other volunteers to carry out this work. The intern may be invited to assist with other activities such as weekend work parties and juvenile salmon data collection for additional experience/hours.
Vegetation Monitoring Internship: Vegetation Monitoring Interns assist SFEG staff in field operations including vegetation monitoring, site maintenance, volunteer events, and native plant nursery management. At our native plant nursery, interns perform tasks such as weed control, watering, native plant propagation, small structural updates, and much more. The plants that come from our nursery go to our riparian restoration projects led by staff, volunteers, and school groups. These plants end up at sites all over the Skagit and Samish watersheds!
River Journey Internship: This program will take a group of multilingual students on a journey through the Skagit watershed, from the high mountains to the sea. Through this internship you will help teach these students, in Spanish and English, about the native fish and plants & ecology. You will participate in a series of field trips, including rafting the Skagit River, an overnight adventure with the North Cascades Institute, and stream exploration close to home at Little Mountain Park.
These positions open seasonally or as needed and will appear under “Current Openings” when available. Each internship position is offered only to enrolled college students. These are volunteer positions offering a monthly stipend and require the use of a personal vehicle with possible mileage reimbursement.
